The soap opera behind the construction of Australia’s most iconic building

At the opening of the Sydney Opera House 40 years ago last month there was a notable absentee: the building’s designer. Thousands gathered last week at the Sydney Opera House to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the building’s opening in 1973. Among those at the festivities were Denmark’s Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary. Their presence was a fitting tribute to the building’s designer, Danish architect Jørn Utzon. Utzson’s son Jan was also in Sydney for the anniversary and said he was proud to see the links between Denmark and Australia maintained – and that his father would feel the … Continue reading The soap opera behind the construction of Australia’s most iconic building

Obama denies he made a promise that was videotaped two dozen times

Despite more than two-dozen video recordings showing otherwise, President Obama said that he never promised Americans they’d be able to keep their health care plans under the Affordable Care Act. Speaking to supporters in Washington on Monday, Obama claimed that in the past, he said, “You could keep [your plan] if it hasn’t changed since the law was passed.” However, the Daily Caller reports that there are at least 29 videos showing the president leaving out the crucial words, “if it hasn’t changed.” Instead, he unambiguously stated numerous times that “if you like your health-care plan, you will be able … Continue reading Obama denies he made a promise that was videotaped two dozen times

U.S. Points Out that Only Tyrants Treat Journalists As Terrorists … While Doing the Exact Same Thing

U.S. and U.K. Attack Independent Journalists The U.S. government is targeting whistleblowers in order to keep its hypocrisy secret … so that it can keep on doing the opposite of what it tells other countries to do. As part of this effort to suppress information which would reveal the government’s hypocrisy, the American government – like the British government – is treating journalists as terrorists. Journalism is not only being criminalized in America, but investigative reporting is actually treated like terrorism. The government admits that journalists could be targeted with counter-terrorism laws (and here). For example, after Pulitzer Prize winning … Continue reading U.S. Points Out that Only Tyrants Treat Journalists As Terrorists … While Doing the Exact Same Thing

The War on Journalism

As long as there have been positions of power, there have been those courageous few willing to speak truth to power. And as long as there have been those willing to speak truth to power, there have been those trying to throw them in jail. As the invention of the movable type printing press spread literacy to the masses and paved the way for newspapers, pamphlets, and broadsheets, the idea of the free press as a “fourth estate” began to take shape. This concept of news media as a vital check on institutional governmental power was taken to heart by … Continue reading The War on Journalism

High on Health: CBD in the Food Supply

Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found within the human body. They’ve been there for 600,000 years or more, but we’ve only just noticed it! One of the remarkable things about endocannabinoids is their striking similarity to the active ingredients of cannabis called phyto-cannabinoids. In fact, it was the effort by scientists to understand the exact mechanism by which cannabis works in the body that led to the discovery of the Endocannabinoid System little more than a decade ago. The science of endocannabinoid medicine has progressed to a dizzying degree in the past few years. There is wider awareness that the … Continue reading High on Health: CBD in the Food Supply

Mystic Chemist: The Life of Albert Hofmann and His Discovery of LSD

The name ergot (Mutterkorn in German) derives from its earlier use as an abortifacient and a midwife’s aid, since the components trigger labor. The ergot of rye, Secale cornutum, is primarily used medically. Depending upon the habitat, host grass, … Continue reading Mystic Chemist: The Life of Albert Hofmann and His Discovery of LSD

Prelude to the Metaphysics of Ping-Pong

The following is excerpted from the Prelude in The Metaphysics of Ping-Pong, published by Yellow Jersey Press, Random House. The book has been longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book Award 2013. During a summer some years ago our friend Rupert Sheldrake — the controversial philosopher of science — his wife Jill and their two boys, Merlin and Cosmos, paid us a visit. I gave the boys rackets and showed them a few strokes. It was instant karma: they were hooked. Back in London, they persuaded their father to buy them a table and he himself has become a player. … Continue reading Prelude to the Metaphysics of Ping-Pong
