Based on the examination of the arm bone of a 24,000-year-old Siberian youth, scientists believe that new origins for Americas indigenous peoples may carry a west Eurasian background that’s linked to the Middle East and Europe, rather than entirely from East Asians as previously thought. “These results were a great surprise to us,” study co-author and ancient-DNA specialist Eske Willerslev, of the University of Copenhagen said, via National Geographic. “I hadn’t expected anything like this. MP leading review of modern slavery says scale of problem becoming clear after three women allegedly found in captivity. The case of three women allegedly held as slaves for 30 years in south London is the “tip of a rather large iceberg”, an MP in charge of reviewing evidence of slavery in Britain has warned. ‘Violence against women on rise in Paris’

A French female activist says violence against women is on the rise in France, calling on the government to do more to stop this serious social problem. Annie Sugier, the speaker for the International League for Women’s Rights, said on Friday that about 10 percent of French women are physically abused and hundreds of thousands raped every year. Unfortunately, many of these cases go unreported because the victims fear further mistreatment from their husbands or abusers, she said. Swastika on ice? Latvian solar symbol stunt causes outrage in Russia

Russian hockey fans and anti-Nazi groups were outraged after dancers supporting a Latvian hockey club laid out a symbol resembling swastika right before a game with their Russian guests. The Kontinental Hockey League found no problem with the symbol. The idea of the ice show ahead of Sunday’s match between Russian HC Yugra and the Latvian hosts, Dinamo Riga, was to mark the 95th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia. UK school threatens to label primary school children “racist” if they don’t attend an Islamic workshop

Via the Daily Mail Parents were ordered to send their children to a workshop on Islam or have them labelled as racist for the rest of their school career. They were sent a letter warning that the primary school pupils would have a ‘racial discrimination note’ put on their records if they did not go. Families were told to pay £5 per child for the Explore Islam trip next Wednesday to Staffordshire University, which would involve Year 4 and Year 6 children being shown Islamic artefacts. Spain Moves Toward Heavy Fines For Insulting Police And Protesting Without Permission

Spain is on the verge of passing a draconian measure that threatens fundamental values of free speech. Faced with ongoing protests over economic conditions, the Spanish government is about to make insulting police officers and protesting without permission crimes punishable by fine greater than dealing drugs or prostitution. Not since Franco has the country turned so decidedly against civil liberties and free speech.
