Separatist spirit: Catalonia ditches Spanish King’s Christmas speech

King Juan Carlos’ traditional Christmas speech was knocked off the air in Catalonia for the first time in 30 years. Catalonian public TV attributed the move to a strike and denied claims it was linked to the push for independence from Spain in the region. Catalonia’s public channel TV3 showed a regular news broadcast instead of the Spanish monarch’s Christmas Eve address. Workers at the channel held a half-hour strike that coincided with the speech to protest budget cuts and production outsourcing. Cuts to the autonomous northern region’s state services have become a major bone of contention with Madrid amid … Continue reading Separatist spirit: Catalonia ditches Spanish King’s Christmas speech

Land of the Free? US Has 25 Percent of the World’s Prisoners

The United States has about five percent of the world’s population and houses around 25 percent of its prisoners. In large part, that’s the result of the “war on drugs” and long mandatory minimum sentences, but it also reflects America’s tendency to criminalize acts that other countries view as civil violations. In 2010, The Economist highlighted a case in which four Americans were arrested for importing lobster tails in plastic bags rather than in cardboard boxes. That violated a Honduran law which that country no longer enforces, but because it’s still on the books there its enforced here. “The lobstermen … Continue reading Land of the Free? Obama can’t point to a single time the NSA call records program prevented a terrorist attack

National Security Agency defenders, including President Obama, continue to cite the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001 when defending the program that scoops up domestic call records in bulk. But asked specifically, on Friday, if he could identify a time when that program stopped a similar attack, President Obama couldn’t. That’s because the program hasn’t prevented a second 9/11. At the end of the year news conference, Reuters‘s Mark Felsenthal asked: As you review how to rein in the National Security Agency, a federal judge says that, for example, the government has failed to cite a single instance in which … Continue reading Obama can’t point to a single time the NSA call records program prevented a terrorist attack

‘The Only Thing We Have to Fear…’ is the CIA … President Truman’s true warning on the CIA

Fifty years ago, exactly one month after John Kennedy was killed, the Washington Post published an op-ed titled “Limit CIA Role to Intelligence.” The first sentence of that op-ed on Dec. 22, 1963, read, “I think it has become necessary to take another look at the purpose and operations of our Central Intelligence Agency.” It sounded like the intro to a bleat from some liberal professor or journalist. Not so. The writer was former President Harry S. Truman, who spearheaded the establishment of the CIA 66 years ago, right after World War II, to better coordinate U.S. intelligence gathering. But … Continue reading ‘The Only Thing We Have to Fear…’ is the CIA … President Truman’s true warning on the CIA
