Rising Skyscrapers Are Sentencing Hundreds of Millions of Birds to Death a Year

Siegfried Layda/Getty Images  BY ALEX TESAR On a chilly day in Toronto, Michael Mesure, executive director of a local bird conservation group, leads me up several flights of stairs in City Hall. We walk down a hallway and there stands a large, white chest—a freezer—with a lid straining to close against its contents. Mesure removes a heavy Rubbermaid bin to reveal dozens of migratory birds of every size and plumage—hermit thrushes, common yellowthroats, white-crowned sparrows. Some look mummified in Saran wrap; others are frozen in plastic bags. There’s at least a hundred inside. “This is barely a sample of the … Continue reading Rising Skyscrapers Are Sentencing Hundreds of Millions of Birds to Death a Year

Hanging Ten Over the Apocalypse with Belief in Our Essence

by Sol Luckman, Guest, Waking Times I believe … a most curious phrase. We’ve heard about the biology, but what is the etymology of belief? Belief stems from Old English and once meant trust in God. This made belief a close bedfellow of faith. But with the spiritual-materialist split known as the Enlightenment, where soul and body were declared by Church and State to have parted ways, we in the West lost our faith as belief came to mean merely mental acceptance of a thing as true. MEET THE MILITARY-FUNDED AI THAT LEARNS AS FAST AS A HUMAN

SOURCE: DEFENSE ONE A computer program, funded in large part by the U.S. military, has displayed the ability to learn and generate new ideas as quickly and accurately as can a human. While the scope of the research was limited to understanding handwritten characters, the breakthrough could have big consequences for military’s ability to collect, analyze and act on image data, according to the researchers and military scientists. That, in turn, could lead to far more capable drones, far faster intelligence collection, and far swifter targeting through artificial intelligence. You could be forgiven for being surprised that computers are only now catching up … Continue reading MEET THE MILITARY-FUNDED AI THAT LEARNS AS FAST AS A HUMAN

‘Rushing into robotics revolution without considering impact,’ warn scientists

© Jason Lee / Reuters Governments should examine the effects of robotics on human civilization before automated machines leap “out of factories to automate all aspects of our lives,” a group of scientists warns. The Foundation for Responsible Robotics, launched on Friday in London, aims to persuade governments and industries to look at the ways robots will impact on society. They want organizations to look at the way robots could disrupt the job market, and believe policymakers have so far failed researched the issue. Robotics professor at Sheffield University and Chairman of the foundation Noel Sharkey said the potential problems must … Continue reading ‘Rushing into robotics revolution without considering impact,’ warn scientists
